A site about radio’s carriers, the platforms replacing them, and who pays for the signal.

About

Radio’s carrier, and who pays for it

The switch from analogue to digital transmission is a dated political decision in every territory that has taken it, and a deferred one everywhere else.

What the site covers

Norway ended its national FM networks across 2017. Switzerland followed. Germany chose a receiver mandate instead of a shutdown date, the United Kingdom has moved its own date more than once, and the United States has never proposed one. Around those decisions sit the platforms that absorbed the listening, the royalty frameworks that pay for a stream but not for a terrestrial broadcast, the codecs and transmission chains that carry the signal, and the companies whose balance sheets shaped what is left.

How it is organised

Five sections: The Switchovers, Listening, The Money, The Signal and The Groups. Every piece belongs to exactly one of them, and every piece is pinned to a year on the scale that runs across the top of each page. Where the record carries no single date, the scale carries a bracket instead of a numeral.

Finding a piece

The register lists all 31 pieces in year order. The map lists them by country. The sections page lists them by subject.
